1. The grip work is the point
Picking up a thick wooden piece and guiding it into a slot is real fine motor practice - the kind of pincer grip and hand-eye coordination that later supports writing, buttoning, and using cutlery. Cardboard puzzles and screen-based "puzzle" apps skip this step entirely. The resistance and weight of solid wood is what makes the exercise work.
2. Cause and effect, without overstimulation
Wooden puzzles give a clear, immediate result - the piece fits, or it doesn't - without the flashing lights and sound effects of a screen. For kids who are easily overstimulated, that calm, predictable feedback loop matters.
3. They scale with the child
A good wooden puzzle can be solved three different ways: matching shapes into slots, stacking pieces as blocks, or just exploring them as objects. That flexibility means a single puzzle can support a child at very different stages - useful for therapists working across a range of ages and abilities, and great value for parents.
